Urinary tract infections in teens and adults

Bacteria that enter the urethra and travel up the urinary tract are the usual cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). He urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body. Urine is produced in the kidneys and flows through the ureters to the bladder, where it is stored until a person urinates.

The urethra is significantly shorter in women than in men.
 The intestine (bowel) is the long, winding, tube that is part of the digestive tract. The intestine helps to process food, extract and absorb nutrients and water, and eliminate waste.

The intestine is divided into two main parts: the small intestine and the large intestine.

    * The small intestine (small bowel) receives food from the lower end of the stomach and continues to digest it before passing it into the large intestine. The small intestine is about 20 ft (6.1 m) to 23 ft (7 m) long and about 1 in. (2.5 cm) wide.
    * The large intestine (large bowel) absorbs chemicals (such as sodium and chloride), nutrients, and water from the digested food. It also prepares waste (stool) to be expelled from the body. The large intestine may also be called the colon. It is about 5 ft (1.5 m) to 6 ft (1.8 m) long and about 3 in. (7.6 cm) wide.
Bacteria that normally live in the large intestine and are present in feces (stool) are the most common source of infection. Sexual intercourse may introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, especially in women.The lymphatic system is made up of a network of lymph nodes and vessels or channels throughout the body. This system carries lymph fluid, nutrients, and waste material between the body tissues and the bloodstream.

The lymphatic system is also an important part of the immune system, the body's defense against disease. The lymph nodes filter lymph fluid as it flows through them, trapping bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances, which are then destroyed by special white blood cells called lymphocytes.

When a part of the body is infected, the nearby lymph nodes become swollen as they collect and destroy the infecting organisms. For example, if a person has a throat infection, lymph nodes in the neck may swell and become tender.

Cancer can spread through the lymphatic system. Catheters, which are small, flexible tubes inserted into the bladder to allow urine to drain, are a common source of bacterial infection in people who are hospitalized or live in long-term care facilities.

Occasionally, bacteria traveling through the blood or lymph system cause kidney or bladder infections.

Kidney stones, an enlarged prostate in men, and structural problems in the urinary tract can contribute to UTIs by limiting the body's ability to eliminate urine completely.
